Prague International Jazz Festival
Prague Jazz Festival
One of the most traditional jazz events in the world, Prague International Jazz Festival is an annual musical event that is held in the Czech Republic capital. First established in 1964, this festival attracts not just musicians, but also lovers and enthusiasts of jazz music from all over the world. Jazz music once represented one of the few means of artistic expression during the Czechoslovakia’s days under Communist
rule. Therefore, this art form is an important part of Czechoslovakian culture and citizens of Prague view jazz music as a symbol of personal freedom.
Famous jazz acts including the Paramount Jazz band fronted by Acker Bilk, BB King, David Brubeck and the Stan Getz quintet have all performed at Prague Jazz Festival in the past.
Although this is primarily a jazz festival, there are other similar musical genres such as blues, black gospel and music inspired by the gypsies that can occasionally be heard during the festival. This is owing to the efforts of the festival organizers to attract a larger and more diverse audience.
Every autumn, the various events of the festival are usually held at the Rock Café and the Reduta. Prague International Jazz Festival in Prague attracts a large number of people and one should book hotel accommodation well in advance.
