Zizkov area of Prague, Czech (Hill, monument & TV Tower)
Zizkov was once a traditional working class area and the stronghold of the communist party much before the beginning of the war. Today, this area is a popular tourist attraction on account of its rich history and is called Red Zizkov by the locals.
Visitors to Prague often stop by the Zizkov area in order to visit some of the very famous landmarks in the region. The most popular of Zizkov’s landmarks are the Zizkov TV Tower and the Zizkov Hill. Apart from these two attractions, the region also features many
other places of interest, some great shopping centres and a number of eateries that serve some of the best food in all of Prague.
Zizkov’s TV Tower is a relic of the communist regime, and was completed in the year 1989, after which the locals and nearby residents condemned its usage. Today, the TV Tower broadcasts over 20 channels, and is a popular tourist destination; it also is the canvas for some very innovative public art displays, like David Cerny’s Miminka. The other big attraction in the Zizkov area is the Zizkov Hill, which is also called Vitkov; the hill is a strip of land that separates the Zizkov from the Karlin.
On top of the hill is the beautiful Zizkov Monument, which is a tribute to the Czechoslovakian legion that fought against the Hadsburg. Apart from these two attractions, there are interesting cemeteries to visit in the region, like the war cemetery and the New Jewish cemetery.
