Smichov area of Prague, Czech guide
The Smichov area of Prague once served as the site of Prague’s leading industries. Today, tourists will be able to notice how this once industrial part of the city has been converted into a shopping hub and popular tourist destination. Many of the buildings that were used for industrial purposes have now been converted into shopping malls that are popular with tourists and locals. Factories and industrial buildings now serve as residences or offices for local Smichov businesses.
Visitors to the Smichov area of Prague should pay a visit to the St Wenceslas Church, which was built in the late nineteenth century; this is one of the biggest tourist attractions
in the area. Other attractions include the Staropramen, Prague’s largest brewery and the second largest in the entire Czech Republic. Tourists will be able to learn about the beer industry and the beer making process from Staropramen and its visitors centre.
The Smichov area is well-known throughout Prague, for having once played host to one of the foremost musicians of all time – Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. You can pay a visit to the Bertramka villa, which is a museum dedicated to Mozart, his life and works. Legend has it, that Smichov, or more specifically, the Bertramka villa in Smichov, was where Mozart completed his work on the world famous opera Don Giovanni, while a guest at the villa. This fact alone, for tourists who have heard his work and appreciate musical genius such as his, makes the Bertramka villa worth visiting.
